What does a cleft palate and bilateral cleft lip have to do with building confidence?  Ask Kim Kerrigan.  He has coped exceedingly well despite being born with this congenital birth defect and has gone on to become an exciting, dynamic, and very confident corporate trainer and public speaker.

Today, as President and co-founder of Corporate Classrooms, a Massachusetts-based communication skills training firm, Mr. Kerrigan does what he loves best--communicates his ideas to others.  Whether he is presenting a communication skills seminar, or talking to groups about his greatest childhood challenge, Mr. Kerrigan stimulates and motivates his audience with his infectious energy, self-confidence, humor, and warmth.

He credits his perceptive and positive- thinking parents with much of his success.  “From the day I was born, my parents were determined that I would grow into a healthy, confident human being,” says Mr. Kerrigan.  “The greatest sacrifice my parents were to make--indeed my entire family was to make--lay not with finances.  Rather, it would be the time-consuming development of proper speech patterns and the instilling of a healthy self-confidence in its newest family member.”

Now the author of five books published by Prentice Hall Direct, Mr. Kerrigan is adding another facet to his successful career as an educator and corporate training specialist.  He is helping people to develop and nurture their self-confidence, so they can better cope—and succeed—in today’s very complicated and fast-paced world.  From the unwed mothers to whom he teaches grammar, so they can pass their GED exam and find jobs, to the well-paid, Brookes Brothers suited executives who come to him to improve their presentation skills, Mr. Kerrigan’s main message is one of building confidence.  “You will be successful when you think of yourself as a unique and special individual with many gifts to offer others,” he enthusiastically tells one audience composed of people with diverse backgrounds and distinct viewpoints.  “If I can do what I do, you can do what you set out to do.”

“Naturally, it takes work.  I overcame a birth defect that had the potential to cause serious speaking and listening problems and am now eagerly addressing this audience,” he relates to a group of Mexican businessmen assembled for his highly acclaimed presentation skills seminar.  “And, you, too, can overcome the barrier that exists when English is not your native language. When you are standing in front of people who have gathered to hear what you have to say, you are in a position of great power.  Take your power, own it, and, above all, respect it.  Respect your audience and their time; their concerns; their expectations or desires; their intelligence; their fears; their potential investment in you and your company; and, most of all, respect their trust.  Your audience has come to listen to you. . . Say something important, and say it well.”

Meanwhile, he speaks passionately to a group of unwed mothers ages 14 to 49 about what he believes is a key to both happiness and success in life:  “Your life will be immensely enriched when you realize that being different from others is a wonderful and lasting opportunity for your growth as a human being. Always be confident in yourself and in your ideas.  In other words,” he says, “you are different from everyone else, and different is good.”
